Sunce je samo jedna od najmanje 100 milijardi zvijezda u na\u0161oj galaksiji. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p> U vidljivom svemiru vjerovatno ima vi\u0161e od 100 milijardi galaksija.\u00a0 Pre\u010dnici ve\u0107ine galaksija kre\u0107u se izme\u0111u 1000 i 100.000 parseka i obi\u010dno ih me\u0111usobno razdvajaju milioni parseka. <strong>Parsek<\/strong> je osnovna jedinica za mjerenje udaljenosti u svemiru. <em>1 parsek = 3,26 svjetlosnih godina<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Iako jo\u0161 uvijek nedovoljno shva\u0107ena, <strong>tamna materija<\/strong> (Tamna materija je naziv za materiju u svemiru koja ne emituje niti reflektira elektromagnetno zra\u010denje, zbog \u010dega je ne mo\u017eemo vidjeti.), \u010dini se, u\u010destvuje sa 90% u masi ve\u0107ine galaksija. Posmatranja ukazuju na to, da bi u sredi\u0161tima ve\u0107ine, ako ne i svih galaksija, mogle postojati supermasivne <strong>crne rupe<\/strong> (Crna rupa je nebesko tijelo koncentrisano od mase s gravitacionim poljem tako jakim da \u010dak i izlazna brzina iz najbli\u017eih ta\u010daka prekora\u010duje brzinu svjetlosti. Sve do ranih 1920-ih, ve\u0107ina astronoma je mislila da Mlije\u010dni put sadr\u017ei sve zvijezde u svemiru. Procjenjuje se da Mlije\u010dni put sadr\u017ei 100-400 milijardi zvijezda i najmanje toliko planeta. On je tvorevina u obliku <strong>diska<\/strong> pre\u010dnika otprilike 100.000 svjetlosnih godina, a u popre\u010dnom smjeru mnogo manje. Analiza me\u0111uzvjezdane materije sugeri\u0161e da svijetla materija (ona koja emituje elektromagnetno zra\u010denje) \u010dini samo 10% ukupne mase galaksije. Ostatak \u010dini tamna materija. Cijela na\u0161a galaksija u stanju je kretanja, ali ne kao \u010dvrsto tijelo, pa stalno mijenja oblik. Kao i ostale zvijezde, Sunce kru\u017ei oko centra galaksije. Za jedan puni krug treba mu pribli\u017eno 220 miliona godina i taj se period naziva <strong>kosmi\u010dkom godinom<\/strong>.
